Acre

The State of Acre, in the extreme west of the North Region, has its image very attached to the Amazonian landscape. Being close to the rainforest makes the humidity, the heat and rains the main characteristics of the region. For decades, the rubber was the base of the economy in the region. Today, only a small part of the inhabitants survive from the extration of the latex. Other products of the forest have gained fame: açaí is very appreciated in the center-south of Brazil, the folha de pimenta longa long pepper leaf, used to manufacture natural perfumes and hair products, natural food and medicines.

Vitória Régia, Acre

The State gained world media attention at the end of the 1970s with the seringueiros' union movement against the deforestation and for the preservation of the environment, led for Chico Mendes, assassinated in 1988.
